Sailing Life cruising guide

Bunbury

Overview

Bunbury is a practical and well-protected stop for cruisers heading along the South West coast. With a sheltered bay, good holding and access to marina facilities, it’s one of the most useful ports between Mandurah and Busselton.

Koombana Bay offers a calm anchorage close to the CBD, and the Bunbury Waterfront precinct has everything a cruising yachtie needs.

Anchorage

Koombana Bay provides reliable protection in offshore winds.

  • Depth: 4–10m
  • Bottom: Sand, good holding
  • Protection: Best in easterlies; exposed to westerly swell
  • Hazards: Frequent dolphin activity around moorings

The mooring field can be active with local boats, so choose a spot away from channels.

Facilities

  • Fuel (diesel/petrol) at Bunbury Yacht Club slipway
  • Restaurants and supermarkets within walking distance
  • Water, power, showers at the marina
  • Haul-out and basic repairs available

Notes for Cruisers

A reliable, friendly port and a great staging point for rounding Cape Naturaliste or heading north.
