Ningaloo Coast, Western Australia – cruising area

Coral Bay

Ningaloo Coast, Western Australia

Overview

Coral Bay sits on the sheltered eastern edge of the Ningaloo Reef and offers one of the most spectacular turquoise anchorages in WA. The bay is calm, shallow, and home to coral bommies just metres from the beach. A perfect stop for cruising sailors heading up or down the coast.

This is a relaxed, resort-style stop — expect smooth anchorages in lighter winds, clear water, and gentle conditions compared to the open Indian Ocean.

Anchorage

The main anchorage sits behind the fringing reef and is well protected from the prevailing south-to-south-westerlies. Sand holding is generally excellent, but coral heads are scattered throughout, so a careful approach is recommended.

  • Bottom: Sand patches with occasional coral
  • Depth: 5–10m
  • Protection: Good in SE–SW winds, exposed to northerlies
  • Hazards: Shallow coral bommies, swimmers, tour boats

Things to Do

  • Drift snorkel the coral gardens just metres from shore
  • Swim with manta rays (local charter operators)
  • Walk the coastal dunes for sunset views
  • Visit the shark nursery at the northern end of the bay

Notes for Cruisers

Coral Bay is a stunning stop but can be busy during holiday periods with tour boats, swimmers, and moorings. Fuel is available by jerry cans only. No marina facilities.

A must-visit for anyone cruising the Ningaloo Coast.
