South West — Western Australia – cruising area

Geographe Bay — Busselton

South West — Western Australia, WA, Australia

Approach

Geographe Bay offers one of the easiest approaches in WA. The seabed shelves gradually, and depths remain consistent far offshore.
Approach from any direction except the west during heavy weather, when swell and chop can build across the entire bay.

The iconic Busselton Jetty is the key landmark and stretches almost 2 km into the bay.

Anchorage

Anchoring is possible almost anywhere along the bay in 5–12 m on sand, making it one of the region’s most forgiving anchorages.

Shelter is excellent in summer easterlies and south-easterlies, with long, calm days typical from December to March.

Holding is generally good, but the seabed becomes firmer near the shore.
Avoid anchoring directly in the swim zones adjacent to Busselton Jetty.

Facilities & Services

Busselton provides easy access to:

  • Shops, restaurants and cafes
  • Public toilets and beach showers
  • Busselton Jetty observatory and museum
  • Fuel (road transport only)
  • Good mobile reception
  • Protected beaches for dinghy landings

There are no public moorings, but the vast anchoring area ensures plenty of space even on busy summer weekends.

Hazards & Cautions

  • Exposure to westerly weather systems, especially winter fronts
  • Afternoon sea breezes can push a light chop toward shore
  • Shallow areas near the beach — approach with care when landing a dinghy
  • High jet ski and small-boat traffic during holidays

Anchoring further offshore may reduce noise and wake in peak season.

Skipper’s Notes

Geographe Bay is one of WA’s most comfortable cruising areas for new sailors thanks to its predictable summer conditions. Long beaches, clear water and easy access to town make it ideal for overnight stops or relaxed day sails.

In winter, treat the bay with more respect — the otherwise gentle curve of the coastline offers little shelter from powerful westerly systems.
