Rottnest Island, Western Australia – cruising area

Parker Point

Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Overview

Parker Point is one of Rottnest Island’s most iconic bays, famous for its bright turquoise water, white sand, and marine sanctuary zones. It’s a popular daytime anchorage and mooring field located on the island’s south-eastern side.

This is not a nighttime anchorage due to exposure — but on a calm day it is absolutely spectacular.

Anchorage & Moorings

Parker Point is part of the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) managed mooring system. Anchoring is not permitted inside the marine sanctuary.

  • Moorings: Public and seasonal moorings available (check RIA maps)
  • Depth: 3–10m
  • Bottom: Sand and reef
  • Protection: Good in light easterlies; exposed to anything with south in it
  • Swell: Often wraps into the bay — expect rolling in SE winds

This spot is best visited early morning when the light turns the bay bright blue.

Things to Do

  • Snorkel the swim-through limestone caves
  • Explore the underwater snorkel trail
  • Walk the Parker Point boardwalk for panoramic views
  • Spot large schools of herring and surgeonfish

Notes for Cruisers

Parker Point is ideal for:

  • Day trips from Fremantle or Cockburn Sound
  • Morning snorkels before the seabreeze builds
  • Photography (one of the island’s most photographed bays)

Avoid overnight stays — nearby Thomson Bay or Geordie Bay offer far better protection.
