Perth — Western Australia – cruising area

Thomson Bay, Rottnest Island

Perth — Western Australia, WA, Australia

Approach

Approach Thomson Bay from the north or east, giving the southern reefs and shoals a wide berth. A well-marked channel leads into the main settlement area. Ferries operate frequently at speed, so maintain a good lookout and avoid loitering in the transit lanes.

Navigation is straightforward in settled weather, but visibility can be reduced when strong sea breezes kick up afternoon chop across the bay.

Anchorage & Moorings

Thomson Bay is the busiest anchorage on Rottnest and offers a large number of public and rental moorings. Anchoring is prohibited in most of the central bay due to seagrass protection and the density of moorings.

Depths range from 3–8 m, with the best shelter found in southerly and south-easterly winds.
Expect a noticeable surge when swell wraps around the eastern end of the island.

For overnight stays, a mooring booking is strongly recommended during summer and school holidays.

Facilities & Services

The settlement offers the island’s best range of facilities:

  • Fuel (seasonal)
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • General store and bakery
  • Toilets and showers
  • Ferry connections to Fremantle and Perth
  • Bike hire and island tours

Mobile reception is generally reliable but can slow down during peak holiday periods.

Hazards & Cautions

  • Extensive reef systems border the southern and western approaches
  • Afternoon sea breezes can build a short, steep fetch
  • Heavy ferry traffic
  • Strong moorings-only restrictions — anchoring zones are limited

Exercise caution when manoeuvring through congested mooring fields, especially in the late afternoon when boats are returning from day trips.

Skipper’s Notes

Thomson Bay is a favourite for first-time visitors and cruisers wanting easy access to the island’s facilities. It’s lively, convenient and well-protected in most summer conditions — but not always the quietest overnight.

For calmer nights, consider exploring some of Rottnest’s smaller bays once you’re familiar with local conditions.
